Fungi Foray Weekend in Wales
Mid Wales Holiday Lets and local resident and Fungi Foray specialist Dan Butler offer you Fungi Forays, aimed at the beginner with an interest in edible fungi. Concentrating solely on the wide range of delicious mushrooms that thrive in our spectacular Mid Wales scenery in the Cambrian Mountains. Unlike many other forays, Dan positively encourages guests to pick mushrooms to taste later, believing that when it comes to exploring nature, it is best to harness all the senses.
You will arrive on the Friday at one of our pet friendly self catering apartments and take time to enjoy Rhayader and the Elan Valley. The foray will then convene at 10am in Rhayader on the Saturday where you will meet Dan. You drive in convoy to a three-hour walk where you collect a range of edible species before returning to a lovingly-restored Welsh longhouse for a wild mushroom-based meal with drinks, field guide (or mushroom knife) and dried Welsh porcini included in the price. Children and dogs are welcome for free. Lunch is followed by tasting and preserving sessions.
Mushrooms are a wild harvest, Dan cannot guarantee results, but on a high season foray we would usually expect to find up to a dozen edible varieties, including porcini; boletes; shaggy ink caps; parasols; chanterelles; blewits; fairy ring champignons; amethyst deceivers; field-, oyster- and hedgehog mushrooms; puffballs, cauliflower- and beefsteak fungus.
On Sunday, take time to explore Mid Wales. Book a tour inside an Elan Valley dam, hire cycles or a Pony Trekking experience, these are just a selection of things to do in Rhayader.
Fungi forays are available on the weekends 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th September and 7th and 14th October.
