Rhayader Carnival 2026
Nestled in the Outdoors Capital of Wales, Rhayader provides an unforgettable setting for its over 100-year-old annual Carnival Week. Now in its 121st year, this is one of the longest-running carnivals in Wales—a living tradition that draws visitors from far and wide. And it’s not just a week—it’s eight whole days of non-stop fun, packed with events for all ages. It’s the perfect reason to visit Rhayader, Cwmdauddwr, and the Elan Valley—combining local heritage, natural beauty, and vibrant community spirit all in one extended celebration.
So… What Went Down During Carnival Week 2025?
The festivities for 2025 were brimming with variety and laughter from start to finish:
Sunday, 13 July – Junior and senior treasure hunts, a vintage show and rally, plus a car treasure hunt won by Girls Aloud, beating a competitive field of 34 cars.
Monday, 14 July – Local exhibition launch and a Grand Quiz Night at Cwmdauddwr Community Centre, won by Twelve Eyes and Three Richards out of a field of 21 teams.
Tuesday, 15 July – The challenging Gwastedyn Hill Race saw 185 runners take on the course, with Ben Gethin claiming victory in an impressive 29 minutes.
Wednesday, 16 July – “World Championship Wednesday” featured welly-wanging with 66 entries and a wheelbarrow race with 36 teams. Ellis and Luke took the star prize for the adult wheelbarrow race, while Calvin was crowned overall winner of the Rock-Paper-Scissors contest after a fierce battle with Jamie.
Thursday, 17 July – It’s a Knockout is some people’s highlight of the week, and 2025 was no exception, with the Rhayader Ballers taking the Dan Hughes Memorial Trophy after a thrilling and good-spirited contest.
Friday, 18 July – The lively Groe Gathering with music, food, and games, plus a darts tournament at Rhayader Football Club.
Saturday, 19 July – Wow, what a day—I heard people say they have never seen so many people, never seen so many entries, and never seen so many lorries—and I have to agree! The grand carnival day was packed with floats, fancy dress, and a spectacular parade, followed by entertainment at the Groe with strongman acts, axemen, donkey rides, and more.
Sunday, 20 July – Knockout cricket on the Groe to close the celebrations, with the famous Glen Douglas Trophy being presented to Stevie Walsh and the winners being Rhayader Fire Station.
Highlights That Made It Truly Special
Carnival Royalty: Carnival Queen Libby Williams reigned over the festivities with her attendants.
Quirky Competitions: From welly-wanging to rock-paper-scissors, the events were as creative as they were competitive.
Best Dressed Window: Well done to The Arches for winning the coveted title of Best Dressed Window of the Week! It was a close-fought contest, with Quillies and Little Pink Tree hot on their heels.
Misfits and Volunteers: The incredible Misfits team pulled it out of the bag again! With each member taking on specific roles—planning events across the week, rallying volunteers, creating the Carnival Queen’s floats, and booking acts—they once again came together to produce a spectacle that other towns can only admire.
Local Meets Festive: The Groe came alive with Mighty Smith the Strongman, Wye Valley Axemen, live music, food stalls, donkey rides, and face painting.
Century-Old Tradition: Over a hundred years of heritage proudly on display, proving that community celebrations only get better with time.
